Papallacta -ECUADOR

Adventure trip

Papallacta is famous for its hot springs and pools, as well as its beautiful setting high in the hills. It is a day trip from Quito city about an hour and a half and 3 hours from the city of Tena, although you may want to stay longer if you intend to go hiking in the area.

Papallacta is at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, so it can be very cold and often rainy or foggy. It is an excellent starting point for hiking or walking (although the height may lose time a bit), with the advantage of a dip in the hot pools after a long day of walking on the moor (tall grass). Time can be serious when it is up on the moor and fog can descend very quickly, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing, maps and a compass, or better yet, a local guide.
Wealth hydro-thermal waters is because Papallacta is located between the Cayambe and Antisana volcanoes.
The temperature of the hot springs in origin varies between 30 ° and 70 ° C (86 ° to 158 ° F) and in the pools fluctuates between 36 ° and 40 ° C (97 ° to 104 ° F).
ENJOY OF.... natural waters sulfated, sodium, calcium, chloride magnesium slightly. Odorless, colorless, slightly salty taste. Improve intestinal motility, are antiallergic, desinflamatorias, diuretic, antirheumatic, sedatives, etc.
Papallacta moor is home to some Polylepis forest fragments - "paper trees", a very rare endemic species growing much higher in the mountains than almost any other tree. The passage of Papallacta, over 4000 m above sea level, is a good area to try to see the huge Andean condor. Spectacled bears and tapirs that also inhabit this ecosystem, although it is unlikely to be seen, since both are endangered and prudent humans.
